JB CIQ Crossing Guide: Best Times, Documents & E-Gate
Last updated July 2026 — timings and requirements can change; always check official sources before you travel.
JB CIQ (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine) is the checkpoint complex in Johor Bahru where travellers clear Malaysian immigration when crossing to or from Singapore via the Woodlands Causeway. Here's how to plan a smoother crossing.
Which Checkpoint Should You Use?
There are two main road crossings between Johor Bahru and Singapore: the Woodlands Causeway (JB CIQ, closest to JB Sentral and JB City Centre) and the Second Link at Tuas, which tends to be quieter and less congested, especially during rush hour or long weekends.
Best Times to Cross
| Peak hours | 30 minutes to 1 hour to clear immigration |
|---|---|
| Off-peak / weekday midday | Often under 5 minutes |
| Sweet spot | 10:00am–3:30pm on weekdays, or after 10:00pm on Sunday nights |
Documents You'll Need
- A valid passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity, for all travellers including Singaporeans, Malaysians and foreigners.
- A Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) is mandatory for foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia.
Using E-Gate Malaysia
E-Gate Malaysia is an automated immigration clearance system available at Johor Bahru checkpoints. Eligible travellers scan their passport and verify by fingerprint instead of manual counter clearance, which can bring immigration clearance to under a minute for registered users.
A New Crossing Option: The RTS Link
As of April 2026, the RTS Link rail project — which will offer a co-located immigration crossing between Bukit Chagar (JB) and Woodlands North (Singapore) — was on track for a targeted January 2027 opening. Living Near JB CIQ
For daily commuters, living close to JB CIQ can meaningfully cut down crossing time versus driving in from further out. EXSIM's Causewayz Square is about 600m from JB CIQ via a link bridge, while The Celestz and The Asteriaz in Kebun Teh are also positioned within the wider CIQ/RTS corridor.
